How to use your old AT&T remote as a DIRECTV remote

If you signed up to AT&T TV during its heyday, your service is now delivered by DIRECTV. But you can still use your old clicker as a DIRECTV remote—and why wouldn’t you? Instead of juggling multiple inputs, you can use the universal AT&T remote to control several devices at once.

Whether you’re pairing your old AT&T TV remote to a new streaming device setup or resetting an existing connection, this guide can help you watch all your favorite entertainment with one powerful controller.

Program your old TV remote for DIRECTV

Step 1: Set up your streaming device

Before you can use your old remote for DIRECTV, you’ll need to make sure your new streaming device or old AT&T TV box is working properly and connected to your TV subscription.

  1. Plug in your new streaming device to an outlet, or power cycle your old device by unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds, then plugging it back in.
  2. Check that all HDMI cables are connected properly.
  3. Turn on your TV and navigate to the correct input for your streaming device.
  4. Open the preloaded DIRECTV app or download it from your device’s app store, then sign in with your DIRECTV credentials.

If you’re still running into trouble, reach AT&T tech support at 1-800-288-2020.

Step 2: Program your AT&T TV remote

Now that your device is ready to stream DIRECTV, it’s time to pair or reprogram your trusty AT&T remote.

  1. Point the remote at your new or old streaming device.
  2. Press the “Fast Forward” and “Rewind” buttons at the same time and hold for three seconds.
  3. Wait for a confirmation message that your remote is paired and ready to use.
  4. Follow the onscreen prompts to finish configuring your remote.

Troubleshooting tips

Problems with a paired remote? First, try removing and replacing the batteries. If that doesn’t help, perform an AT&T remote reset by pressing and holding the “Dash (-),” “Diamond,” or “Apps” button. When the lights on the AT&T remote blink blue twice, it’s ready to reconnect to your streaming device.
