How Appearing on The Bachelor Affects Instagram Standing

The passion. The heartbreak. The roses. The man. And aaaalllll the drama

Yes, we’re talking about The Bachelor. And yes, true to form, the most current season (featuring Matt James as the titular single man) was filled with all of these things—with a certain Queen Victoria bringing more than enough drama in all by herself. There’s a reason the reality show remains a fixture in pop culture and a TV streaming sensation.

Entertainment value aside, viewers seem to find a connection with the women who brave love’s battlefield, and flock to the contestants’ social media pages to learn more about their personalities and daily lives. So how does appearing on the show affect an individual’s presence on a platform like Instagram? The team at All Home Connections set out to discover the Instagram accounts (belonging to the women from the most recent season) whose activity and engagement changed the most.

An elementary school teacher in Minnesota, Michelle remained dedicated to her students throughout the show, and her personality always displayed an authentic warmth that Matt James definitely vibed with. Her athletic resume was pretty impressive as well: Michelle was a Division I college basketball player. Though newer to Instagram, her profile was an instant hit when she appeared on the show, gaining more than 100,000 followers and an increased engagement rate of 17.02%. Finishing second place overall, it’s no doubt Michelle proved that she’s a contender in more ways than one.

Though Bri’s job is shrouded in mystery (she’s a communications manager for a “high-profile social media company”), her knowledge of the industry has definitely helped her Instagram presence increase by over 100,000 followers. That, and perhaps her hobbies—you’ll often find her on the trails or beaches of California or dancing her heart out at a music festival. Raised by and very close to her single mother, Bri values strong women and displayed herself as such on the show. She succeeded in gaining a rose during the hometown visits, but ultimately came in third place after being sent home following the overnight date.

Abigail is a financial manager who won the coveted “first impression” rose the very first night of the competition, securing a prominent place in the house early on. She’s also an accomplished golfer and music lover, and despite a hearing impairment she doesn’t let much get in her way. Abigail was sent home before the final rose ceremony, but that didn’t stop her from becoming an instant fan favorite. If you need proof, just check out her Instagram profile, which increased by over 350,000 followers—that’s a 5,806% bump!

Plucky Serena Pitt cemented herself in everyone’s memory the second she stepped out of the limo that first night clutching a stepstool, so that she could stand eye-to-eye with Matt James upon meeting him. The only Canadian contestant and former competitive dancer, Serena ended up eliminating herself from the competition, to Matt’s dismay. She not only left an impression on the Bachelor himself—Instagram immediately took to the fashion and beauty publicist and her following went up by over 65,000.

Victoria aside, Rachael arguably attracted the most controversy this season, and social media was at the center of it. The graphic designer and Southern belle got serious flack for posts on her Instagram page that were deemed inappropriate, which accounts for why she has fewer posts now than before appearing on The Bachelor. Despite the roller coaster of the Instagram drama, Matt followed his heart and worked past it, awarding Rachael the final rose. Unfortunately, the couple has since separated, and there’s no telling if reconciliation is in sight.

As the daughter of fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, Kit was probably the contestant most used to the limelight this season after growing up in the socialite atmosphere of New York City. Before appearing on the show, the NYU student had the biggest initial Instagram presence with nearly 45,000 followers. Considered the “best dressed” of the season (naturally), Kit has followed in her mother’s footsteps as a young clothing designer, and the two also co-host a podcast called Ageless. Despite being the youngest contestant this season and going home before the final four, it’s safe to say Kit’s still got a lot going for her.

Methodology

This particular study reviewed the Instagram account information for the contestants of the 25th season of The Bachelor (2021). We began by gathering this information on December 14, 2020, including number of posts, number of followers, and the average engagement rate of the posts. Since the last 6 participants entered the competition later, we gathered the data for their Instagram accounts on January 18, 2021.

  • From there, we looked at the percentage of increase or decrease in the number of posts, followers, and engagement rate for each of the current season’s contestants.
  • “Engagement rate” refers to the amount or level of interaction a social media post or piece of content gains. It can include reactions (e.g. likes), shares, follows, or comments.

Spilling the Tea: What We Found Interesting

If there’s one thing The Bachelor excels at, it’s divulging all the juicy details. In the spirit of the show, All Home Connections’ researchers held nothing back when uncovering shifts in the bachelorettes’ Insta fame. Here are just a few tidbits we found:

  • In general, there was an increase in contestants’ Instagram posts, followers, and engagement rates from before the individuals were on the show to after.
    • The average account posts increased by 15%.
    • The average account followers increased by 4,659%.
    • The average account engagement rate increased by 555%.
  • Bri Springs was the individual whose engagement rate increased the most by a total of 1,160%.
    • This growth isn’t exactly a surprise, as she is a Communications Manager for a “high-profile social media company.” (And at just 24, too!)
  • Kit Keenan was the individual whose engagement rate increased the least by a total of 253%.
    • Kit also earned the fewest  new followers. Her following increased by 550%
    • Kit had the biggest Instagram presence before appearing on the show, which may account for the lack of growth.
  • Michelle Young was the participant who earned the most new followers. Her following increased by 10,915%.
    • Michelle was the only contestant that did not have much of an Instagram presence before appearing on the show, which most likely accounts for the spike in followers.
  • Rachael Kirkconnell was the only participant who had a decrease in posts. Her posting decreased by 36%.
    • This is likely due to the controversy stemming from pictures Rachael posted and posts that she liked on Instagram that many viewers deemed inappropriate.
