Copper or Fiber—What’s the difference?

Copper

Copper cables are literally made from copper material, transferring data through electrical pulses. Intended initially to transmit voice data, copper cables have been repurposed to transfer internet data and are what most cable providers use today.

Because of the older material, copper wires can only send data for limited distances at limited speeds. Copper wires have been around for a long time, making it a suitable and reliable connection option for more rural areas of the country.

Fiber

Fiber internet uses fiber-optic cables bundled together to transmit data through pulses of infrared laser light. This method provides internet speeds that allow for quick streaming and downloading.

Fiber-optic cables are not susceptible to the same electrical mishaps as copper wires because of how they transmit data. They’re fully-resistant to fire, electromagnetic interference, lightning, or radio signals. Although made of glass, fiber-optic cables are still durable because they’re covered in a protective coat to make them last longer.
