To show public disapproval of the Obama Administration, Republican activists have created a successful “Google bomb.” What does this mean? Internet users who type ‘worst failure ever’ into a Google search engine will see the White House’ official website for President Barack Obama as the top-ranked result. Google bombs, also called link bombs, are often motivated by political activism, advertising or humor. This isn’t the first time Google’s ranking system has been tampered with.
In 2003, the search term ‘French military victories’ delivered a result that read “Your search – French military victories – did not match any documents. Did you mean French military defeats?" The most famous link bomb of all, the one which clearly inspired the Barack Obama slam, was the ‘miserable failure’ incident in October 2003. Prior to George Bush’s re-election, a Google bomb was created that linked Bush’s White House biography with the search term ‘miserable failure.’
